OAKLAND, Calif. Head-Royce broke an early tie with 36 consecutive points and beat College Prep 78-19 on Saturday, June 24, in a boys junior varsity summer game. The Jayhawks improved to 3-0 behind a defense that recorded 22 steals and turned them into 26 points off turnovers.
Micah Riebel scored the game's first basket, and College Prep answered to tie the game at 2-2. It was the only tie of the game, and College Prep never led. Jonah Greenberg scored three of Head-Royce's next four baskets, two of them off turnovers, and Ezra Goldfarb set up two of those four baskets. Sam Gulaid scored on back-to-back feeds from Jack Peay, and Peay scored off a turnover to make it 20-2.
Riebel then scored six straight Head-Royce baskets to push the lead to 32-2, three of them off turnovers. Greenberg and Mikael Akpala followed with baskets off turnovers, and Greenberg's second basket in that stretch finished the 36-0 run at 38-2.
College Prep ended the run with a second-chance 3-pointer, but the Jayhawks kept scoring. After a College Prep basket made it 40-7, Head-Royce scored the next 13 points. Akpala scored twice in the run, and Riebel added a 3-pointer and a basket off a turnover, assisted by Akpala, to make it 53-7. Peay then scored eight points in a 10-0 run that stretched the lead to 63-9. Tua Montoya added two baskets, the second on a pass from Greydon Ting, and a 9-0 run that began with another Riebel 3-pointer made it 76-14, Head-Royce's largest lead at 62 points. Akpala scored Head-Royce's last basket before College Prep closed the scoring.
Riebel led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds and a steal. Greenberg scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and led the defense with six steals, adding four rebounds, two assists and a block. Akpala also scored 14 points, making 7 of 10 shots, and had two steals. Peay made all six of his shots for 12 points and added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Goldfarb finished with four points and four assists, and Gulaid had four points and two blocks.
Head-Royce shot 67.9 percent from the field (38 of 56) and assisted on 17 of its 38 baskets while committing five turnovers. The Jayhawks outrebounded College Prep 24-6, grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points. College Prep shot 31.8 percent (7 of 22), made all three of its free throws and had one assist.
Head-Royce has now won three straight games to start the summer season and is 3-0.
