Head-Royce JV Routs International JV, 61-33

A 15-0 run broke an 11-11 tie, and Micah Riebel scored 18 points as the Jayhawks won their third straight game.

OAKLAND, Calif. The Head-Royce boys junior varsity broke open a tie game with a 15-0 run and never looked back, beating International JV 61-33 on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023. Sophomore Micah Riebel scored 18 points and made 4 of 5 3-point attempts as the Jayhawks improved to 12-6 and won their third straight game.

The early going was even. Sanil Saxena opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and Mikael Akpala followed with three baskets, but International JV answered each one. The teams were tied four times, the last at 11-11. Head-Royce never trailed.

Riebel broke the last tie with a 3-pointer off an Akpala assist, and that shot started the decisive 15-0 run. Akpala scored on a pass from Riebel, and Sam Gulaid added a basket on another Riebel assist. Riebel hit a second 3-pointer, Jonah Greenberg scored off a feed from Ezra Goldfarb, and Riebel capped the run with his third 3-pointer to make it 26-11. After an International JV basket, Riebel made his fourth 3-pointer, and Max Roston-Saul added a basket and a free throw to push the lead to 32-13.

International JV answered with a 7-0 run that cut the deficit to 32-20, but Saxena stopped it. He hit a 3-pointer off a turnover, scored on a Riebel assist and then made another 3-pointer to make it 40-21. That started a 9-0 run: Seabass Heredia-Zulaica scored on a second-chance basket, Riebel added a basket and Luke Silva's putback made it 46-21. Head-Royce closed with one more 9-0 run from 52-30. Greenberg scored five straight points, and Riebel and Goldfarb each scored after a turnover to make it 61-30, the Jayhawks' biggest lead at 31 points.

Riebel led Head-Royce with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added three assists, a steal and a block. Saxena had 11 points with three 3-pointers and four rebounds. Akpala filled the stat sheet with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, a game-high eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals without a turnover. Greenberg added seven points, five rebounds and five steals, and Goldfarb had seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Jayhawks shot 25 of 51 from the field (49 percent) and 7 of 17 from 3-point range. They had assists on 17 of their 25 baskets and forced turnovers throughout, finishing with 15 steals. Head-Royce pulled down 34 rebounds, nine of them offensive, and all 10 players who appeared in the box score scored.

Head-Royce is now 12-6 and has won three games in a row.
